Voilà ! My first oil painting!
This is a copy piece I did, and it's from a painter called Henri Martin. He was French. I didn’t know about him before I decided on a subject matter. It just happened that I chose a painter who was born in the same city that I live in right now. What a strange coincidence!
Anyway, the teacher wanted me to find a painting that I like to copy, but the choices are limited. The purpose is to practice observation of light and shade, and I had hard time finding what I wanted to paint from a stack of books and papers in class. It took me almost two hours to find a subject. The teacher chose this one for me, because he thought it was easier to start. After all, it wouldn’t be much fun to get too frustrated at first try, would it? (It wouldn’t be helpful for my self-confidence!)
For me, this piece has certain difficulties. It was complicated to get all the colors to match the original painting, especially I used only five different colors to paint (White, red, yellow, blue and purple). For someone who rarely paints with color mixing, I have to say that it was a pain in the ass to copy this painting. (Normally, I paint with acrylic and I don’t mix the color much. It’s a different style of painting) I spent almost four hours to draw the rough draft, and then I spent another twelve hours to paint the whole thing.
I wasn’t sure if I could achieve this exercise, and I doubted myself constantly. However, I went ahead and tried my best to make it as good as it can be, even though my mind was in turmoil, because I had no idea what I was doing. In the end, I learnt a lot and improved my knowledge of painting! I am just so glad I did it!
I will share another painting next time soon!
